Research

"Students at Rutgers are enrolled in a research university, and this makes the undergraduate years especially exciting and rewarding. A research university is a place where teaching and learning cannot be separated, where teachers are themselves engaged in the constant challenge of learning. Students at Rutgers not only study knowledge, they help create it. All undergraduates are encouraged to play an active role in the university's research efforts, working side-by-side with faculty in classrooms, laboratories, and in the field. There are many avenues to pursuing research, from a comprehensive, year-long study of such topics as "Neuroprotection by Uric Acid in a Model of Spinal Cord Injury" or "Parenting Styles and Conduct Disorder among Adolescents" to a summer spent on a marine research vehicle in the South Pacific. The opportunities are as broad as the panoply of courses offered at Rutgers and as varied as the fascinating faculty who teach them.

The Aresty Research Center for Undergraduates assists students in learning about the process of undergraduate research, identifying faculty mentors and projects, defining research goals, seeking funding for a project, seeking guidance in the ethical aspects of doing research, and presenting their findings to the university and the general public. The Center also serves as a resource for faculty who are actively mentoring undergraduates or who are interested in working with undergraduates and need assistance finding and funding students. Visit the Aresty Research Center in Milledoler Hall to learn more about how you can participate in undergraduate research, or visit their website at http://aresty.rutgers.edu/index.html.

Honors Academics

Highly motivated, exceptional students are invited to apply to the honors programs offered by the undergraduate schools at Rutgers-New Brunswick. Though the programs are geared to the missions of individual schools, they share the goal of engaging students who seek demanding and stimulating intellectual challenges. Program features typically include close collaboration with outstanding faculty; honors courses and seminars; special advising; completion of an in-depth research project; participation in academic, cultural, and social events on and off campus; and the option of living in honors housing. As an honors program student, undergraduates become creative problem solvers, develop proficiency in critical and analytic thinking, and hone their communications skills, while they gain greater independence and preparation for lifelong learning.

In addition to honors programs administered by individual schools, Rutgers' academic departments offer honors tracks. While specific criteria for acceptance to and completion of honors tracks vary by department, all students in honors tracks have rich and rigorous academic experiences.
